ILS Tutorial – Flight Simulator X
This tutorial covers the basics of the ILS (Instrument Landing System) and IMO, the three (3) things virtual pilots need to make any ILS approach to any runway with a ILS system. I believe my “Three Numbers System” simplifies the procedure, but is enough to allow beginners and veterans to perform and successfully fly a ILS approach anywhere in the (virtual) world the ILS exists. Aircraft: Default 737-800 Scenery: Default Environment: Default Feel free to ask questions in the comments section. NOTE TO AVIATORS: If you are a real world pilot who would like to comment on my tutorials, you are more than welcome to. However, keep in mind FSX is a simplified video game intended for a mass audience. Therefore, not every single thing is going to be 100% accurate to your real world experience.

@ProFlightSimMedia hmm so do you think there is any point in flight simulation?
OMG ive watched absolutley loads of videos on how to ILS land and none have helped – im new to the game and havent got much pratice yet which is why i ILS land. But anyway, this video is the only one which actually helped me and the only one i understood! great! 10/10
OK, mine LOC and G/S indicators are captured and in the middle right heading me to the runway. But everytime when I get near and press APP my plane got crashed on the runway because of the wrong altitude it calculates or something. Can someone give me advice? It is f**king anoying for me! The hardest part of this game is the landing!
haha i posted a comment saying how good it was becasue it works , then i tried to do it again and it didnt , i use IFR because i dont know how to use VFR so could you reply to this comment sayin what to do (in order, in and IFR flight) after the atc has told me to maintain altitude until established on the localiser?
@unpons – make sure you havent got anything on except approach hold, speed hold and your alltitude hold should automatically turn off when you intercept the g/s. it took me ages to get it to work – i wrote it down so i remember what to do! just keep practicing at two airports that are close to each other! And also make sure to pause it about 100ft abve the runway and disable all auto pilots and ‘flare’/touchdown the plane youself or else youll just crash into the runway!
hey i have been wondering, the vids awesome, but do you know how to make a plane slow down on air and make it almost seem like not moving? O.o i seen real planes do it and been trying to reduce speed on fsx but stall XD maybe you know something?
This is great. It’s all done simply but it’s one of the best tutorials I’ve seen an answered a lot of questions I still had after watching lots of other tutorials.
how do you know when to start the procedure?
hey proflight you don’t need to turn off the altitude hold switch it will turn off by itself
anyway nice video 5*
Watch the video more closely.
I never turn off the Approach Hold switch.
How far (in distance) do u have to be
for the Nav 1 freq to become active?
actually u dont need to turn off the auto pilot at all for the landing if u program the ils b4 ur take off it will do all auto EVEN LANDINGS!!!idk about runway takeoff and leaving the gate though but there easy to do any way
The default planes in FSX do not have true autoland functionality.
Riding the glideslope down to the runway is NOT an autoland.
you used real environment xxtreme
@lolarosexx 25nm i guess…
cst1908 said Altitude Hold Switch, not APP.
I dont understand what you mean… Dont go under 150kts though.
You didnt mention how fast you go or when you decrease speed!
Hey, how did you get the glide / slope. I’ve seen the video several times and still dont get it. I have the game in spanish (although prefer english, totally), so some things are a little different, so please show me or explain me the posicion of G/S. What is the G/S if I’m VFR flight. Also, you’ve put a lot of waypoints to guide you. Explain that, because I used to not get the NAV signal (being too far) and never got straight to the runway. You put waypoints to be straight with it much before
select the destination or airport you want to land at from the gps and use the airport code, for example, for Melbourne International Airport its YMML, then select the ILS runway, then program that runway into your Nav com1 and activate it, then select navigation autopilot to allow the plane to respond to the NAV signals. try that k.
15NM . 15 nautical miles, sometimes more., 20. you can intercept the G/S at a height of 4000ft if that tickles your fancy.lol
approach hold takes over from Navigation mode, navigation will take you to the airport, approach hold will make the auto decent, not an autoland, be careful . Dont forget to set your trims for landing k. goodluck. Contact approach on 120.5.
most planes its about 160knts
make sure you have autopilot master switch on, heading hold, speed hold. you adjust your heading throughout the flight when the ATC tells you. when he waffles on a the localizer do as he says(i.e descned or turn) the put the ils frequency in the NAV1 radio and activate it. TURN OFF HEADING HOLD – then i turn on approach hold straight away but in this video he turns it on later, but i works either way..
In the real world it can be much slower.
The FMC / FMGC calculates your land and approach reference speed (VREF) based on numerous factors.
